Founded in 1994 and based in the USA, VICE is a media group mainly focusing on arts, culture, and news topics. It has brunches worldwide, including China. In China, VICE is getting more and more popular, especially after the release of a documentary about Edison Chen.

This analysis aims to peep the profile of its social media audience.

The Twitter account of Vice was created in November 17, 2008, and now has over 200,000 tweets. Averagely, it posts about 73 tweets per day.

Up to June 7, the account has about 1.53 million followers. Instead of analyzing them all, this report lays eyes on the latest 5,000 followers to see the newest tendency.

Most of these five thousand followers has less than 100 followers themselves. The average number of followers are 835, which means some of VICE’s followers are fairly influential.

From the chart below, it can be seen that a majority of VICE’s followers have been active in the last 24 hours, or at least in this week. These are less likely to be zombies.

These followers are most interested in the tweets containing words like music, love, fan, and writer. Some other words such as news, food, film and fashion also are the major part of VICE’s content.


According to the allocation map, the followers are most concentrated in the United States, Europe, and surprisingly India.

The Facebook page of VICE has over 5 million followers. This analysis looks into the posts from May 23 to June 5, two weeks, and analyze the audience engagement.

The engagement indexes include the amount of likes, comments and shares. 827 posts are extracted by the means of R studio.

According to the plot above, 12 o’clock on Sunday’s midnight is the most engaging time. Others, such as 8 pm on Tuesday and 8 am on Saturday, also win a great amount of total engagement.


During this period, the most engaging post is a link posted on 8 pm, Tuesday, May 24. The content is “This is for the funny guy shouting for “Creep” at the back, if only to shock you.  (via Noisey)” It has 22,031 likes, 1,967 comments and 4,208 shares. 28,216 engagements in total.
